James Earl Ray (1928-1998) was an American fugitive and convicted assassin of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Ray was convicted of the assassination in 1969 and sentenced to 99 years in prison. He escaped from prison in 1977 and remained a fugitive until he was recaptured in London
